Brandon, O'Gorman Split: A Team Loses Heartbreaker; B Team Dominates

A game:

BV 9, O'Gorman Knights 25

(Brandon, SD)-- The Sioux Falls League opener for BV did not go as planned as the O'Gorman Knights marched into Brandon and defeated the A team 25-9. The Lynx started the game fast, with a touchdown run of 73 yards by Cam Holmes on the first play of the game. After another three and out for O'Gorman, Holmes took the ball and raced another 50 yards, getting the ball down inside the 10 yard line. After a pass completion and short run, O'Gorman stuffed the Lynx on third and goal, forcing a field goal attempt. Devan West booted the ball through the uprights to give the Lynx a 9-0 lead and all the momentum. From this point on, the Lynx offense would become stagnant and the O'Gorman offense began to pick up steam. O'Gorman's first touchdown come at the end of a 13 play, 75 yard drive. Their second score, this one to take the lead, came in the second quarter and was another grind it out, pound the ball up the field with their traditional wing T offense and misdirection plays. The third quarter went by relatively quickly, with no scoring done by either team. Despite the lack of offense shown by the Lynx, they had a chance in the fourth quarter. With ten minutes to play, down by 8 points, Devan west intercepted a pass. The offense drove the ball, but stalled again, coming up with no points. The defense held and the Lynx found themselves with yet another chance to put together a game-tying drive. The drive started out smoothly, but on a 3rd down and 3 play, an O'Gorman defender stepped in front of the pass and picked it off, racing 55 yards for a touchdown. "It was a tough loss, no doubt about it," said Klumper, "I told the kids that it should hurt, it should sting because that shows it means something. It means something to us. We want to win these games." The Lynx will hit the road next week for their first away game of their, traveling to Sioux Falls to face Memorial Middle school on Thursday, Oct. 1st.

B game:

BV 19, O'Gorman Knights 6

(Brandon, SD)-- After the tough loss in the A game, the Lynx were looking to set things right in the B Game. Like the A team, the B team started strong, scoring a touchdown on the first posession. Behind the hard running of Antony Pacheco and Cain Scott and the blocking of all involved the Lynx pounded the ball down the field as O'Gorman could do nothing to stop them. Unlike the A team, the B team kept up the fine playing all game, defeating O'Gorman 19-6. "We were in control the whole game," said Klumper, "no doubt about it. O'G had no answer for our rushing attack." Antony Pacheco started the scoring out with a great touchdown run, then later in the second half, found the endzone again with a 34 yard scamper. "Antony ran the ball very hard. All of my running backs ran hard and the line blocked great. Total team effort on offense," said Klumper. Defensively, it was clear the Lynx wanted it more as they were constantly busting through the offensive line, making their misdirection very difficult. It appeared as if the Lynx were going to come away with a one touchdown lead when Cole Julius intercepted a pass and ran it back for a touchdown, giving the Lynx a two touchdown victory. Also for the Lynx, Cain Scott continued to rack up the rushing yards, compiling 132 yards and 223 yards passing. The Lynx will try to remain unbeaten in the Sioux Falls league next thursday as they face the Memorial Middle School Mustangs in Sioux Falls on Oct. 1st.

BV Lynx Defeat Brookings Bobcats in ESD Opener

A Game:
BV Lynx 10, Brookings Bobcats 0

(Brandon, SD)--Monday night at Brandon Valley middle school was the ESD opener for the Lynx. Brandon Valley and its high-octane offense, was coming off a sensational victory over Axtell Park last week. On this night, the offense was anything but extraordinary as the Brookings Bobcats managed to ground the air attack. Despite the lack of fire power displayed by the Lynx, Brandon Valley still managed to come up with the victory, due in large part to the solid defensive game plan of Defensive Coordinator Jeff Trout. "The offense was struggling a bit, but the defense stepped up and picked up the slack," said Klumper. The game started off with Brookings on the attack as the Lynx stayed back on their heels, letting the Bobcats come at them. Throughout the entire first half, the Lynx offense was kept out of the endzone, but it was the defense who put points on the board, recording a safety mid-way through the second quarter. It was beginning to appear as if the game would end in a 2-0 tie as the third quarter saw no scoring from either team. Whenever a team would start a successful drive, the defense would clamp down and hold their ground. Both defenses were "bending, but not breaking." Midway through the fourth quarter, the Lynx forced a turnover on defense and handed things over to the offense to put the game away. "I addressed the offense. I looked at every single offensive lineman in the eye and told them this game was going to be won on their shoulders," said Klumper. The offensive line of Eric Ode, Trey Lee, Mason Mitzel, Jacob Meyers, Derek Johnson, Zach Bingen, and Trace Smykle were up to the task, as they began to dominate the line of scrimmage, creating holes for Cam Holmes and Noah Kulzer to gain yardage. "The line began to dominate and both Cam and Noah ran the ball extremely hard. I was very proud of them," noted Klumper. With the Lynx driving and the time running out on the Bobcats, Cam Holmes busted one up the middle of the defense and sprinted 64 yards for the touchdown that put the game away. On the ensuing drive of Brookings, BV held on to their second straight shut out as time expired.

B Game:
BV Lynx: 21, Brookings Bobcats 7

(Brandon, SD)--The night-cap of this ESD clash saw the Brandon Valley Lynx run all over the Brookings Bobcats, defeating them on a score of 21-7. The scoring got under way right from the start for the Lynx, as the opening drive was taken down the field with cutting moves, slashing jukes, and a stiff-arm like no other by Antony Pacheco. Cain Scott, making his season debut, also turned in a stellar game rushing the ball, accounting for 186 yards rushing on the night. "The offensive line did a great job tonight," commented Klumper "all across the board, the guys blocked very tough." The defense in this game played solid, causing multiple turnovers such as Cole Julius' leaping interception and Alex Pacheco's mind-boggling interception along the sidelines. "Those two made unbelievably athletic plays," noted Trout. After the opening touchdown drive, both teams settled in and traded punts for the majority of the second quarter. In the third quarter, Cain Scott began to take control as he willed his time down the field with toughness and leadership. The second touchdown of the night was a Cain Scott leap over 3 defenders into the endzone. "That is what you call a 'crowd pleaser'" said Klumper, "the fans got their money's worth tonight seeing that play." The game was put out of reach late in the fourth quarter as Antony Pacheco once again darted outside and raced 44 yards until he was finally pushed out at the one yard line. Pacheco then took the ball up the middle for the touchdown that sealed the victory. In all, the Lynx racked up 344 yards of total offense, while holding the Bobcats to only 112 yards of total offense.

A Game

BV Lynx 48, Axtell Park Lions 0
(Brandon, SD)--The Brandon Valley Lynx opened the season with a stellar performance Thursday night at the Brandon Valley Middle School field. The Lynx started strong and went on to crush the Axtell Park Lions 48-0. The game only lasted two quarters based on the Sioux Falls league mercy rule in which the game is called when there is a 35 point lead. Despite the shortened game, the coaching staff had a chance to see how their team would perform in a game situation. "You never really know how they are going to come out and play in that first game of the season," said Coach Klumper, "but the kids came out ready to play and did a nice job." The scoring bonanza started on the first drive of the game for the Lynx as they marched down the field in two plays, ending with a Cam Holmes touchdown run. The second drive was almost a mirror image of the first, as the Lynx used their massive offensive line to bull rush the defenders out of the way, clearing the path for the lightning quick Cam Holmes. "Our offense line played great tonight," said Klumper, "they absolutely dominated the line of scrimmage." Holmes pumped in another touchdown giving him three touchdowns for the game. Also adding to the rushing attack was Jacob Adams, who made his only carry of the game a memorable one, scampering 64 yards for a touchdown. "Adams showed great effort on that run," said Klumper, "the hole was blocked, so he cut back, gave about 4 stiff-arms, and ran past everyone else." Klumper also pointed out that Trey Lee blocked about seven guys alone on that touchdown run. Ryan Immeker, playing receiver, also had a couple blocks that allowed the tailback to gain huge amounts of yards. Due to the huge success of the running attack, the passing game had a hard time launching. AJ Garrow played a solid game at QB, going 3-4 with two touchdown passes. "Garrow did a nice job making the throws he was asked to make," said Klumper. On the receiving end of those touchdown passes were Dominic Nealy and Devan West. Nealy made the catch two yards down field and six juke moves later, was in the end zone. After West made his catch, he used his blinding speed to out-run the defense to the endzone. The endzone was not the only place West was scoring, though, as he 6 for 6 on PAT'S. On the defensive side of the ball, the Lynx used a swarming, ball-hawking style to totally overwhelm Axtell. Play after play, the Lynx defenders penetrated into the backfield of the Lions, making their offense totally ineffective. "I thought we played a solid defensive game," commented Defensive Coordinate Jeff Trout, "the kids played hard and were just flying all over the field." Cole Albertson intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown, however, due to a penalty, the touchdown did not count.

"I was happy with our effort tonight," said Klumper, "but we have to put this win behind us and focus on our next opponent, the Brookings Bobcats."

B Game:

BV Lynx: 33, Axtell Park Lions: 0

(Brandon, SD)--The B team of Brandon Valley ended the night with another solid, dominating performance. The game started out a bit slow, with each team trying to figure out what the other was doing. However, soon the offensive kicked into high gear and the defense solidified, defeating the Axtell Park Lions, 33-0. The offense was lead by the rushing attack of the Antony Pacheco, Alex Pacheco, and Andy Bowden. Those three running backs combined for 234 yards of rushing in the game and one touchdown. Noah Klamm ran hard at fullback, reaching the endzone for a two-point conversion. The air attacked played equally well. Luke Laycock tossed 3 touchdown passes, connecting with Jon Heiberger twice and Luke Bauske once. "I was really proud of the offense tonight," said Klumper, "they were focused and did a great job of executing the game plan." The defense dug in and made things extremely difficult for Axtell Park. After a few successful out routes, BV made a couple adjustments and really clamped down on the receivers. "The kids played with a very high level of intensity tonight," commented Coach Reese, "they did a nice job sprinting to the ball and making plays."
Just like the A game, the BV offensive and defensive lines were in complete control of the action. The offensive lineman opened huge holes all game and the defensive lineman continued to push their way into the backfield. The highlight of the night did not come until the last play of the game. With Axtell Park threatening to break the shut out, Holden Sjogren stepped in front of the receiver and intercepted the pass with a shoe-string catch. Sjogren then raced 95 yards for a touchdown. "That play was just awesome, the crowd was going wild," said Klumper, "I was really proud of Holden."

Play Like Rudy

Despite being severely undersized for a football player at Notre Dame, Rudy never gave up and managed to actually get in a real game. Rudy did not have natural athletic ability, yet the size of his heart willed him to make it. He gave 100% everyday. He never let up. We can learn something from Rudy. We can learn to always give maximum effort, to come out to practice or games with a focus so sharp that nothing will detract us from our goals. We can learn that if we never give up, if we work harder than anyone else, we can achieve anything. Think about Rudy. Play like Rudy.
