Cat Fight: BV Lynx Defeat Patrick Henry Panthers 13-6

A Game:
Brandon Valley 13, Patrick Henry Panthers 6

(Brandon, SD)--Mother nature made her presence felt in a big way Wednesday afternoon at Brandon Valley Middle School as the rain poured down the entire game. The sloppy conditions made for sloppy play for both teams. In the end, it was the Brandon Valley Lynx who were able to overcome the elements and overcome the opponent, defeating Patrick Henry 13-6. In a game like this, the field position battle is extremely key. The wet field made moving the ball extremely difficult, so the team that held the field position battle controled the game. Early on in the first quarter, the Lynx failed on a fourth down attempt, giving the field position to the Panthers. "I have confidence in my guys to make that play," Klumper commented, "it was there, but the wet ball made things difficult." Patrick Henry took the ball down and scored a touchdown, making the score 6-0. "Even though it was only one touchdown, I knew this wasn't going to be a very high scoring game. One or two touchdowns is all that it was going to take to win the game," remarked Klumper. The second quarter went by without much offensive action, and the two teams went into halftime, with BV down by 6. With a fiery halftime speech, Klumper challenged his team to play more aggressive, more intense, and to play like they wanted to be ther. The Lynx were up to the challenge, as they came out in the second half with a renewed sense of determination. The turning point in the game came midway through the third quarter. Patrick Henry bobbled the snap on a punt attempt. BV rushed in and Jacob Adams picked up the ball and raced for the endzone. Cam Holmes squirted through the line for the 1 point conversion, giving the Lynx a 7-6 lead. "That play was absolutley huge, it totally turned around the game," said Klumper. The defense barely let up a yard the rest of the game, totally overwhelming the Panthers, causing 7 fumbles in the second half. The offense did their job, moving the ball somewhat, but more importantly, running the clock down. Late in the fourth quarter, the Panthers again fumbled, giving the Lynx the ball on the Patrick Henry 5 yard line. With AJ Garrow out of the game with a concussion, Cam Holmes took the QB duties and three QB sneaks later, the Lynx found themselves on the 1-foot line, facing a 4th and goal. Klumper called a timeout to set up the play that was going to seal the victory for the Lynx. "Everyone in the entire stadium knew what we were going to do," commented Klumper, "but I knew there was no way they were going to stop it with Holmes running behind Eric Ode for 1 foot." Klumper proved correct, as Holmes jammed it up into the endzone behind the lead of Ode. Patrick Henry one last attempt at tieing the game failed quickly and the Lynx were victorious. On defense, besides the plethora of fumbles for Patrick Henry that the Lynx recovered, Dominc Nealy had an interception, giving him three for the season.
The Lynx will face Mitchell Kernals on Saturday, October 17th, 2009 at the Brandon Valley High School field. Game time is 9:30 a.m.

Lynx Victorious! BV A and B sweeps Watertown in Thriller

A Game:
BV 20, Watertown Arrows 12 (OT)

(Brandon, SD)--Coming off two straight loses, the Brandon Valley Lynx A team was looking to rebound against ESD foe Watertown. In a pre-game interview, coach Klumper described how he wanted his team to come out and play with enthusiasm and aggression: "Our last two games, we have come out and gone through the motions. I wanted to see a complete change in the way we play I wanted to see us come out, play with a fast tempo, and take it at the opponent." Klumper saw that on this night, as the Lynx defeated Watertown 20-12 in overtime.
The Lynx struck first on a methodical, ball-control drive that chewed up over half the first quarter. Dominic Nealy sprinted in after catching an AJ Garrow pass to give the Lynx a 6-0 lead. "The offense looked sharp on that first drive," Klumper commented, "we need to look like that consistently with good blocking, snapping, and running." The Lynx struck yet again after a long, grind it out drive with a Cam Holmes touchdown surge. "Cam ran the ball well tonight and our guys up front really did a nice job creating running lanes," commented Klumper. Down by twelve, the Watertown Arrows made a nice comeback to tied the score at 12 a piece. Late in the fourth quarter, the Lynx drive stalled and was forced to punt, giving the Arrows one last shot to break the tie and claim victory. The Lynx defense held their ground and forced the game into overtime. In case you, the reader, is unaware of the overtime format, each team gets the ball at the 10 yard line and has four chances to score. Even if the first team on offense scores a touchdown, the other teams gets a chance to tie. The Lynx started overtime on offense, looking to set the overtime-tone early with a score. Klumper was determined to put the game on the offensive line and run the ball. Three Cam Holmes run plays later, the Lynx found themselves at 4th and Goal at the one yard line. Klumper called on quarterback AJ Garrow to sneak the ball up the middle behind Eric Ode and Trey Lee. The play proved successful as Garrow plunged forward for the go-ahead touchdown. A sweep to Holmes gave the Lynx the two point conversion and an 8 point lead. Now it was up to the defense to preserve the victory by stopping the Arrows on four straight plays. After Water town gained 7 yards on their first two plays, a huge tackle for loss left the Arrows with a 4 and Goal from the 15 yard line. Watertown needed a touchdown to force a second overtime. The Watertown QB dropped back and threw up a deep ball that was batted down, giving the Lynx the well-fought victory. "It was awesome, the guys played really hard and earned that victory. I am very proud of the way they competed," said an exuberant Klumper.

A- Game:
BV 28, Watertown Arrows 24

(Brandon, SD)--Wow. There may not be words to describe the scene that unfolded before the eyes of the Brandon faithful during the A- game. The Lynx tried to remain undefeated as they put their undefeated record on the line against the Watertown Arrows before a packed house. A game that was filled with great plays, including one of the most amazing plays ever witnessed at Brandon Valley Middle School, it was the Lynx that came out on top, 28-22.
Just as the A game started out with a solid Lynx touchdown drive, the A- Lynx opened this game up with a very strong drive of their own. The big play on that drive was a 45 yard touchdown run by the unstoppable Cain Scott. "Antony Pacheco ran well, the line blocked well, and Cain Scott ran like a man," said Klumper. The Watertown offense began to click as well, punching in a touchdown of their own shortly after the Lynx scored. The back and fourth action continued into the second quarter, which each time trying to pull away, but the other coming back. Antony Pacheco was responsible for one of those lead changes. After the Arrows scored to take the lead late in the third quarter, Pacheco took the kickoff and raced 73 yards for touchdown run. He bobbled the ball somewhat, but when he got the handle on it, he took off like he was shot out of a cannon and raced around the edge, not to be caught by anyone. The Lynx appeared to have claimed victory, as neither team scored early in the fourth quarter. The Arrows put together a nice drive and found the endzone with 1:12 left in the game to take the lead by two, 22-20. It appeared to be a hopeless situation as the Arrows kicked off to the Lynx and pinned them inside their own 40 yard line. BV needed to go 65 yards in 1:12 to score a touchdown and come away with the win. The first down and second down plays called for a run, trying to get Andy Bowden to break a big one. With the Lynx facing 3rd and long, with only 40 seconds left in the game, one of the most amazing plays happened. "In all my years watching football, playing football, and coaching football, considering the circumstances, that play is definitely in the top five plays I have ever seen in person," said a completely fired-up Klumper. So, it all came down to this one last desperation play for the Lynx. Cain Scott substituted into the game at half back so the Lynx could attempt a half back pass. Scott received the pitch and rolled to the left, where he chucked the ball as far as he could. The ball fluttered in the air and was picked off by a Watertown Arrow defender. As the Arrow player ran the ball, the Lynx seemed to have lost the game. However, the Arrow defender, in an attempt to get more yards, fumbled the ball. Cain Scott, who hustled down the field to try and make the tackle, happened to be in the right place at the right time: looking at the ball laying on the ground. He picked it up and began his race for the endzone. Scott made a few juke moves, broke a few tackles and just when it looked like he was about to spring free, a Arrow defender grabbed the back of his jersey and began pulling him down. Scott would not be denied and displayed an incredible amount of determination as he pulled away from that defender as well and sprinted into the endzone for the game winning touchdown. It was simply an amazing play. As Klumper pointed out to the team afterwards, that play was only made possible by the fact that the guys did not quit, even after the interception. They kept playing hard and trying to make something happen. With the Lynx sideline going absolutely crazy, the win was theirs and their perfect record was intact. The A- team will have two days off and then travel to Sioux Falls Whittier on Friday, October 16th, 2009.

Brandon Valley vs. Edison

BV B Team Dominates, Edison Crushes BV A Team

A Game:

BV 0, Edison Middle School 40

(Sioux Falls, SD)--The Lynx first road test of the year was not a good one, as Edison Middle school ended the game early with the 35-point mercy rule. The game started out with both teams playing well, finishing the first quarter at 0-0. However, in the second quarter, turnovers, mistackles and mistakes plagued the Lynx. The turning point in the game came in the second quarter. With one minute left in the second quarter, the Lynx down by 6, Edison caused a turnover and marched for a touchdown as the second half expired. "That was a crushing blow," said Coach Klumper, "we never recovered from that. We got down on ourselves and started feeling sorry for ourselves." Edison took full control in the second half and ended the game with their sixth touchdown.

A- Game:

BV 19, Edison 6

(Sioux Falls, SD)--Right from the start of the game, the Lynx showed all in attendance who wanted the win more. Edison could not match the level of intensity and aggression displayed by the Lynx. "The guys really played hard," commented coach Klumper, "blocking, tackling, hitting, and running." Early in the game, the Lynx fell behind on a 50 yard run by Edison. From that point on, the Lynx scored three unanswered touchdowns to win the game, 19-6. The scoring got started with a Antony Pacheco touchdown run from 33 yards out. The next touchdown came from hard-running Andy Bowden as he bulldozed his way into the endzone from 5 yards out. Right before that play, Bowden made one of the memorable quotes of the year, telling coach Klumper "I can make it to the endzone." The third and final touchdown for the Lynx came from Quarterback Cain Scott. With zero timeouts remaining, and the clock ticking down under ten SECONDS to go, Cain Scott rushed his offense to the line, took the snap, and raced for the endzone, scoring a touchdown as time expired in the game. "It was very exciting, the whole offense did a great job hustling to the line to get one more play off," said Klumper. The whole team played great, all offenses scored a touchdown and the defense barely surrendered a yard after that initial touchdown. The Lynx will put their undefeated record on the line on Tuesday against Watertown at BVMS.

BV vs. O'Gorman Highlights

Brandon, O'Gorman Split: A Team Loses Heartbreaker; B Team Dominates

A game:

BV 9, O'Gorman Knights 25

(Brandon, SD)-- The Sioux Falls League opener for BV did not go as planned as the O'Gorman Knights marched into Brandon and defeated the A team 25-9. The Lynx started the game fast, with a touchdown run of 73 yards by Cam Holmes on the first play of the game. After another three and out for O'Gorman, Holmes took the ball and raced another 50 yards, getting the ball down inside the 10 yard line. After a pass completion and short run, O'Gorman stuffed the Lynx on third and goal, forcing a field goal attempt. Devan West booted the ball through the uprights to give the Lynx a 9-0 lead and all the momentum. From this point on, the Lynx offense would become stagnant and the O'Gorman offense began to pick up steam. O'Gorman's first touchdown come at the end of a 13 play, 75 yard drive. Their second score, this one to take the lead, came in the second quarter and was another grind it out, pound the ball up the field with their traditional wing T offense and misdirection plays. The third quarter went by relatively quickly, with no scoring done by either team. Despite the lack of offense shown by the Lynx, they had a chance in the fourth quarter. With ten minutes to play, down by 8 points, Devan west intercepted a pass. The offense drove the ball, but stalled again, coming up with no points. The defense held and the Lynx found themselves with yet another chance to put together a game-tying drive. The drive started out smoothly, but on a 3rd down and 3 play, an O'Gorman defender stepped in front of the pass and picked it off, racing 55 yards for a touchdown. "It was a tough loss, no doubt about it," said Klumper, "I told the kids that it should hurt, it should sting because that shows it means something. It means something to us. We want to win these games." The Lynx will hit the road next week for their first away game of their, traveling to Sioux Falls to face Memorial Middle school on Thursday, Oct. 1st.

B game:

BV 19, O'Gorman Knights 6

(Brandon, SD)-- After the tough loss in the A game, the Lynx were looking to set things right in the B Game. Like the A team, the B team started strong, scoring a touchdown on the first posession. Behind the hard running of Antony Pacheco and Cain Scott and the blocking of all involved the Lynx pounded the ball down the field as O'Gorman could do nothing to stop them. Unlike the A team, the B team kept up the fine playing all game, defeating O'Gorman 19-6. "We were in control the whole game," said Klumper, "no doubt about it. O'G had no answer for our rushing attack." Antony Pacheco started the scoring out with a great touchdown run, then later in the second half, found the endzone again with a 34 yard scamper. "Antony ran the ball very hard. All of my running backs ran hard and the line blocked great. Total team effort on offense," said Klumper. Defensively, it was clear the Lynx wanted it more as they were constantly busting through the offensive line, making their misdirection very difficult. It appeared as if the Lynx were going to come away with a one touchdown lead when Cole Julius intercepted a pass and ran it back for a touchdown, giving the Lynx a two touchdown victory. Also for the Lynx, Cain Scott continued to rack up the rushing yards, compiling 132 yards and 223 yards passing. The Lynx will try to remain unbeaten in the Sioux Falls league next thursday as they face the Memorial Middle School Mustangs in Sioux Falls on Oct. 1st.
